Comments Sought on Interim Rules for New Judicial Qualifications Commission

6/28/17 – Comments Sought on Interim Rules for New Judicial Qualifications Commission

Atlanta, June 28, 2017 – The Supreme Court of Georgia today adopted a set of interim rules for the reconstituted Judicial Qualifications Commission. Beginning July 1, 2017, the Commission – which educates Georgia judges about ethical duties and investigates judges’ misconduct – will expand from its current seven members. Under 2017 legislation, the JQC will be composed of a seven-member investigative panel and a separate three-member hearing panel. The new rules are designed to account for this difference as well as upgrade and update the old rules. These are interim rules, as the Commission and the Supreme Court are requesting comment from judges, lawyers and other Georgia citizens before adopting final rules for the reconstituted Commission. The interim rules are available for public comment on the websites of the Supreme Court of Georgia, the Judicial Qualifications Commission, the State Bar of Georgia, and the Administrative Office of the Courts. Comments should be sent in Word or PDF format by email to rulescomments@gajqc.com no later than Aug. 17, 2017. Questions may be directed to the Director of the Commission, Ben Easterlin.
